Hales first gained widespread recognition in 2005 when, at the age of sixteen, he scored 55 runs in a single over (three no-balls, eight sixes, and one four) at Lords in a Cricket Idol T20 competition. Ironically, his rapid bowling skills were the reason he was chosen.

Hales played for MCC Young Cricketers in the Second XI Championship in 2007 after making his Minor Counties cricket debut for Buckinghamshire during the 2006 campaign. He subsequently made an impression while auditioning for Nottinghamshire in 2007, scoring 218 in just his second game for the county and adding another 100 and two 95s. He was given a two-year deal by Notts until the end of the 2009 campaign.
