He was included in Kandy’s roster for the 2018 Super Provincial One Day Tournament that began in April. During the 2018 Sri Lanka Cricket Twenty20 League, he was included in Colombo’s roster in August. His inclusion in the Colombo squad for the 2019 Super Provincial One Day Tournament came in March. He was picked to play for the Chattogram Challengers in the upcoming season of the Bangladesh Premier League in November of 2019.
In the quarterfinals of the 2016 Under-19 World Cup, he scored 95 from 96 balls as Sri Lanka beat England. Later that year, in a bilateral series in England, he scored two consecutive hundreds against the same opposition. It was the first time that Sri Lanka’s under-19 team had beaten England’s under-19 team by a 5-0 score in England.

Without ever having played Twenty20, List A, or first-class cricket, he was called up to the national ODI team for the first time. On August 31, 2016, at Dambulla, he played in his first Day International for Sri Lanka against Australia. He faced only two balls from Mitchell Starc before being thrown out without making a single stroke.
He was selected to represent Sri Lanka at the 2018 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup in December 2018. On March 19th, 2019, he debuted for Sri Lanka in a Twenty20 International match against South Africa.
Avishka hit 50 in the first Twenty20 match he played in, against Oman, on October 7, 2021. He batted unbeaten for 83 and put together a solid partnership with captain Dasun Shanaka, who hit 51 off 24 balls. They scored 112 runs off of the last 56 balls. Sri Lanka triumphed in the end, prevailing by a score of 19 runs.
Sri Lanka defeated Bangladesh by four wickets with an over to spare in their first warm-up game in Abu Dhabi. When chasing 147 runs, Avishka was the top scorer with the bat, scoring 62 runs unbeaten off 42 balls. His impressive play carried over to the next warm-up game. Avishka scored another fifty against Papua New Guinea in their second match. He batted for 37 balls, scoring 61 runs on two fours and four sixes. He formed an effective alliance with Pathum Nissanka. In the end, Sri Lanka prevailed by a score of 39 runs.
