In domestic cricket, Rajapaksa initially represented Sinhalese Sports Club in Sri Lankan domestic cricket and also played for Barisal Blazers in Bangladeshi NCL T20 Bangladesh.
In April 2018, he was named to Galle’s squad for the 2018 One Day Super Provincial Tournament. In August 2018, he was named to Kandy’s squad for the 2018 SLC League T20. In March 2019, he was named to Dambulla’s squad for the 2019 One Day Super Provincial Tournament.
During the 2019 Premier season, Rajapaksa scored a career-high 268 off 173 balls against the Port Authorities for the BRC at the Moors Grounds, hitting 19 sixes and 22 fours in the innings. During Sri Lanka A’s tour of India in 2019, in the second unofficial Test against India A, Rajapaksa scored 110 runs off 112 balls with 17 fours and 3 sixes at the grounds of KSCA, Hubli.
International Career

In September 2019, he was named in Sri Lanka’s Twenty20 International (T20I) squad for the series against Pakistan in Pakistan. He made his T20I debut for Sri Lanka against Pakistan on 5 October 2019, scoring 32 runs from 22 balls in a 64-run win. In the second match, Rajapaksa scored 77 runs off 48 balls as Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by 35 runs. He has been awarded man of the match for his batting performance.
In July 2021, he was included in the Sri Lanka squad for their series against India. He made his One Day International (ODI) debut on 18 July 2021, with Sri Lanka against India. In September 2021, Rajapaksa was named in Sri Lanka’s squad for the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
On January 5, 2022, Rajapaksa announced his international retirement at the age of 30 in a letter written to the SLC citing:. “I have considered my position as a player and a husband very carefully, and I am making this decision pending fatherhood and associated family obligations.” However, on January 13, 2022, he withdrew his retirement letter at the request of the Minister of Sports.
During the 2022 Asian Cup, Rajapaksa struck several match-winning blows against Afghanistan twice and India. In the opening match, Sri Lanka was bowled out with 105 runs, while Rajapaksa was the top scorer for Sri Lanka with 38 runs.
However, Sri Lanka lost the match by 8 wickets. In the Super 4 stage, Sri Lanka again faced Afghanistan, but this time they won the match by 4 wickets. In the steep 175 chases posted by the Afghans, Rajapaksa hammered 31 runs from 14 balls and made a 32-run partnership from 15 balls with Danushka Gunathilake. The chase of 176 was also recorded as the highest T20I chase at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. In the final against Pakistan, Sri Lanka batted first and was held to 58/5 in 8.5 overs. However, Rajapaksa made two match-winning partnerships with Wanindu Hasaranga (58 runs) and Chamika Karunaratne (54 runs unbeaten) where Sri Lanka recorded 170 runs. Sri Lanka eventually won the match and became the sixth Asian Cup champion.
Rajapaksa was voted man of the match for his performance of him. His 71 unbeaten innings also register as the highest individual score while he batted at No. 5 or lower in a T20I men’s knockout game.
