On 4 October 2016, Kumara made his first-class debut for Sri Lanka A against West Indies A. On February 24, 2018, he made his Twenty20 debut for Nondescripts Cricket Club in the 2017-18 SLC Twenty20 Tournament.
Kumara was named to Kandy’s squad for the 2017-18 Super Four Provincial Tournament in March 2018. He was also named to Kandy’s squad for the 2018 Super Provincial One Day Tournament the following month.
Kumara was named to Galle’s squad for the 2018 SLC T20 League in August 2018. He was drafted by the Dambulla Viiking for the inaugural season of the Lanka Premier League in October 2020. He was named to the SLC Greens team for the 2021 SLC Invitational T20 League tournament in August 2021.

Kumara was named to Sri Lanka’s Test squad for their October 2016 tour of Zimbabwe. On October 29, 2016, he made his Test debut for Sri Lanka against Zimbabwe. He took his first Test wicket when he dismissed Peter Moor.
Kumara was named to Sri Lanka’s One Day International (ODI) team for the Tri-Series in Zimbabwe, along with the West Indies.
Kumara was selected for the 2016-17 Test series against South Africa. He took his maiden Test five-wicket haul in the second Test at Newlands Cricket Ground. His figures of 6 for 122 are the best by a Sri Lankan pacer in South Africa and the second-best overall in the country.
Kumara was added to Sri Lanka’s ODI squad for the series against South Africa in January 2017. On 4 February 2017, he made his ODI debut against South Africa at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. He made 5 runs and took his first ODI wicket, dismissing Quinton de Kock for 8 runs.
