Dawson began playing cricket at the age of three and joined Goatacre at the age of seven. He then went on to play youth cricket at Chippenham Cricket Club in Wiltshire, where Hampshire noticed him.

Near the end of the 2007 season, Dawson played three List-A games for Hampshire. He didn’t get a wicket on his first try, but he scored 32 runs in 32 balls. He played his first game against Yorkshire on September 19, 2007, but he didn’t bat or bowl. In 2008, Dawson got his first hundred at Trent Bridge against Nottinghamshire.

In January 2009, he was asked to tour New Zealand with the England Lions team. Dawson was on the team that won the Friends Provident Trophy in 2009 for Hampshire. In 2010, he only played in eight Championship games, and his average at-bat was 29. In the Championship in 2011, he had an average score of 36. He averaged 35 in List A games and earned a good name as a solid batsman.

Dawson’s bowling came into greater prominence in 2012, when he took 26 wickets at an average of 32 for Hampshire in the County Championship. However, he could not maintain his early season success and ended the season with a batting average below 30. In Twenty20 matches, he took nine wickets for Hampshire and established himself as a vital member of the team’s bowling attack.

In 2013, Dawson became the first player to reach 1,000 runs at the first-class level. However, he was not as successful with the ball, taking only eleven Championship wickets.
