In the 2016–17 Premier League Tournament, he had the most wickets taken with a total of 77 dismissals from 9 games and 18 innings.
At Sri Lanka Cricket’s annual awards ceremony in November 2017, he was awarded the best bowler in domestic cricket for the 2016–17 season.
In the 2017–18 Premier League Tournament, he also had the most wickets taken with a total of 70 takedowns from 10 games and 20 innings. He was included in Galle’s roster for the 2017–18 Super Four Provincial Tournament in March 2018. He was also included in Galle’s roster for the 2018 Super Provincial One Day Tournament the following month. With fifteen dismissals in six games, he had the most wickets in the competition.
He was included in Kandy’s roster for the 2018 SLC T20 League in August of that year.
Pushpakumara grabbed all ten of the opponents’ wickets in the second innings of the 2018-19 Premier League Tournament match between Colombo Cricket Club and Saracens Sports Club in January 2019. It was the greatest number in first-class cricket since 1995 and the first ten-wicket haul in an inning since 2009. He became the second Sri Lankan bowler to take all ten wickets in an inning and recorded his 700th first-class wicket in the same game. With 63 dismissals in nine games, including seven five-wicket hauls, he finished the tournament as the top wicket-taker.
He was included on Kandy’s roster for the 2019 Super Provincial One Day Tournament in March 2019. He had eighteen dismissals in nine games, making him the 2019–20 SLC Twenty20 Tournament’s top wicket-taker in January 2020. He was chosen by the Dambulla Viking in the first round of the Lanka Premier League in October 2020.

He was included in Sri Lanka’s Test squad for their series against India in July 2017. On August 3, 2017, he played his first Test for Sri Lanka against India. For his first wicket, he had to bowl 20 overs before stumping Ajinkya Rahane. His bowling statistics for the game, though, were 2 for 156 runs, while India scored 619 in the first innings. In the second inning, Pushpakumara served as the night watchman and scored 16 runs. However, Sri Lanka ultimately fell short by innings and 53 runs.
He was included in Sri Lanka’s One Day International (ODI) squad for their series against India the following month. On August 31, 2017, he played his first ODI against India. Without getting a wicket, he let up 65 runs while only scoring three runs.
He was one of 33 cricketers who received a national contract from Sri Lanka Cricket in May 2018 in preparation for the 2018–19 season.
