A New Zealander father and a Hong Kongese mother gave birth to Chapman in Hong Kong. His mother Anne worked in the financial industry, while his father Peter was a crown prosecutor for the Hong Kong government. Before enrolling in King’s College in Auckland at the age of 14, he attended Island School in Hong Kong. He later went on to study engineering at the University of Auckland. At the 2010 Under-19 World Cup, he was a member of the Hong Kong under-19 team. He was 15 years old.
At the age of 16, Chapman made his World Cricket League debut for Hong Kong against the United States in the 2011 Division Three event. In the 2011 ICC World Cricket League Division Three competition final, he led Hong Kong in scoring with an unbeaten knock of 70 as Hong Kong won the championship by defeating Papua New Guinea. Additionally, it assisted Hong Kong in getting promoted to Division 2 of the 2011 World Cricket League. Chapman’s List A debut against Uganda came during the latter event. In the competition, he went on to play five more List A games, the last of which was against Papua New Guinea.
He scored 192 runs at a batting average of 38.40 in his six competition matches, including two half-centuries and a best score of 81. Against the United Arab Emirates, he recorded his best performance. On November 15, 2013, while competing in the 2013 ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier, he made his T20 debut against Italy.
