In a Twenty20 match in October 2010, Shami made his senior debut for Bengal and recorded four wickets. The following month, he took three wickets in a high-scoring encounter at Eden Gardens against Assam to make his first-class cricket debut.

His bowling in February 2012, when he grabbed eight wickets in the match and was praised for being “excellent, regularly getting bounce and zip from just short of a good length,” helped East Zone win their maiden Duleep Trophy championship. He outperformed Munaf Patel’s seven wickets for 97 runs at Mohali in 2006 with nine wickets for 118 runs, the most by an Indian pacer on debut.

Shami was chosen over Bengali teammate Ashok Dinda for India’s One Day International (ODI) series against Pakistan as a result of his performances in domestic games. Shami made his debut in the third ODI of the series in Delhi on January 6, 2013, and he recorded figures of 1/23 from 9 overs in a low-scoring match that India won by 10 runs.

He was chosen to be a member of India’s team in October 2013 to play the visiting Australians.
