In a Twenty20 match in October 2010, Shami made his senior debut for Bengal and recorded four wickets. The following month, he took three wickets in a high-scoring encounter at Eden Gardens against Assam to make his first-class cricket debut.

His bowling in February 2012, when he grabbed eight wickets in the match and was praised for being “excellent, regularly getting bounce and zip from just short of a good length,” helped East Zone win their maiden Duleep Trophy championship. Shami made his debut in the third ODI of the series in Delhi on January 6, 2013, and he recorded figures of 1/23 from 9 overs in a low-scoring match that India won by 10 runs.
