Pooran, from McBean, Couva, played cricket for Naparima College in San Fernando. Left-handed wicket-keeper/batsman, he represented Trinidad & Tobago at several underage and schoolboy events and made his national under-19 debut at the 2012 regional tournament at 16.
Pooran made his West Indies under-19 debut in a bilateral series against Bangladesh in October 2013 and played at the 2014 Under-19 World Cup. He led the West Indies’ averages and ranked fourth in total runs with 303 from six matches as vice-captain and wicket-keeper.
This featured half-centuries against Canada and India and a tournament-high 143 runs against Australia (from 208 all out), which was “one of the most remarkable innings under duress in the tournament’s history.” Pooran’s 136-run ninth-wicket partnership with Barbadian Jerome Jones set an under-19 record.
