Sarfaraz Khan Early life

Sarfaraz was born and raised in the suburbs of Mumbai. He spent most of his childhood in Azad Maidan. There, Naushad Khan, his father and his coach, raised young cricketers like Iqbal Abdulla and Kamran Khan. His training began at a young age when his father discovered his talent for timing the ball well. In monsoon conditions, it was difficult for her to reach the maidan (ground) from his house in the suburbs, so a synthetic pitch was placed next to his house to practice on. “Not only does it save us time and energy, but it has also helped him get used to the bouncy terrain he will have to deal with later on,” his father said.

He was unable to attend school for 4 years due to his cricket commitments, so he hired a private tutor for his math and English classes.

Sarfaraz Khan Cricket Career

  • Domestic Career

Here is all about Sarfaraz Khan’s Domestic Career.

He came into the spotlight when he broke Sachin Tendulkar’s Harris Shield record, set in 1988, by scoring 439 off 421 balls. It was his first game of his Harris Shield in 2009 when he was just 12 years old. He played for his school, Rizvi Springfield. The entries included 56 fours and 12 sixes. He soon began playing for the Mumbai Under-19 team and his performance for them led to his selection for the Indian Under-19 team.

In 2013, he scored 66 101 balls to win the match against South Africa Under 19s, which included 17 fours and one six. Bharat Arun, the then head coach of the India Under 19 team, commented that: “He is a gusty player, who reads the situation well. He has shots around the wicket and looks even better when playing straight. He uses his feet well and plays cheeky blows too.”

Sarfaraz played for India in two Under-19 World Cups (2014 and 2016). The 2014 U-19 World Cup was played by 16 teams in a round-robin format where India finished in fifth position. He scored 211 runs in six games at an average of 70.33; two innings were fifty, and he finished with a strike rate of 105.5. After this performance, he was bought by the IPL Royal Challengers Bangalore franchise for 5 million for the 2015 season. India finished as runners-up in the 2016 Under 19 World Cup in Bangladesh.

Sarfaraz started his career at Ranji with Mumbai when they played against Bengal in 2014. He started playing for Uttar Pradesh in the 2015-2016 season. By September 2019 he had played 11 first-class matches and had scored 535 runs with the highest score of 155. He had also played 12 list A matches and had scored 257 runs at a strike rate of 96.25. In January 2020, in the 2019–20 Ranji Trophy match against Uttar Pradesh, Sarfaraz scored his first triple century in first-class cricket.

In the 2022 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy season, Sarfaraz also began donning a new avatar as an occasional goalkeeper. Although he was no stranger to wicket keeping in his youth playing days, this was the first time for him in senior cricket.

IPL career

After a good performance in the 2014 Under-19 World Cup, Sarfaraz was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in 2015 for 5 million. At the age of 17, he is the youngest player to have participated in an IPL match. In his debut game against Chennai Super Kings, he scored 11 runs off 7 balls. With the trio of Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers dominating in the next two games, he didn’t get a chance to hit. In the next match he outshone the more established trio of batsmen, scoring 45 runs off 21 balls against the Rajasthan Royals. The innings included six fours and sixes and helped RCB post a grand total. Virat Kohli bowed to him as he returned to the dressing room at the end of the innings. In total in the 2015 IPL season, he played 13 matches and scored 111 runs at a strike rate of 156.33.
